Pray before, during and after your interaction with a person struggling with alcohol. Before: Pray for opportunity to share your faith with person struggling with alcohol. "God, give me opportunity today to speak to people struggling with alcohol about the love and reality of Christ. Fill me with your Spirit so I may proclaim your truths as clearly as I should. Amen." During: Be in tune with the Holy Spirit throughout your interaction with people struggling with alcohol. Consider when and how you can pray with them as your conversation unfolds. After: Ask the Holy Spirit how he would like to intercede on this person's behalf. Consider your conversation with this person, and ask God to move in this area of their life.

Appreciate

To appreciate means to recognize the full worth of something or someone and/or to understand fully. Before you share the Gospel with a person struggling with alcohol, it is best to be sensitive to their situation.  Alcoholism is a complex disease that often results from mental health difficulties such as depression, past traumatic events, familial history and drinking at a young age.  Approach this opportunity to evangelize this person with the utmost love and respect.

People struggling with alcohol are generally very passionate about their faith and take it very seriously. When you interact with a person struggling with alcohol, it is best to practice good listening skills. Pay Attention: Give them your undivided attention. Recognize that non-verbal communication also "speaks" loudly. Look at the speaker directly. Put aside distracting thoughts. Don't mentally prepare a rebuttal. Avoid being distracted by environmental factors. And "listen" to his or her body language. Show That You're Listening: Use your own body language and gestures to show that you are engaged. Nod occasionally. Smile and use other facial expressions. Make sure that your posture is open and interested. Encourage the speaker to continue with small verbal comments like "yes", and "uh huh". Provide Feedback: Our personal filters, assumptions, judgments and beliefs can distort what we hear. As a listener, your role is to understand what is being said. This may require you to reflect on what is being said and to ask questions. Reflect on what has been said by paraphrasing. "What I'm hearing is... ," and "Sounds like you are saying... ," are great ways to reflect back. Ask questions to clarify certain points. "What do you mean when you say... ." "Is this what you mean?" Summarize their comments periodically. Tip: If you find yourself responding emotionally to what someone said, say so. And ask for more information: "I may not be understanding you correctly, and I find myself taking what you said personally. What I thought you just said is XXX. Is that what you meant?" Defer Judgment: Interrupting is a waste of time. It frustrates the speaker and limits full understanding of the message. Allow the person you are interacting with to finish each point before asking questions. Don't interrupt with counter arguments or differing beliefs. Respond Appropriately: Active listening is designed to encourage respect and understanding. You are gaining information and perspective. You add nothing by attacking the speaker or otherwise putting him or her down. Be candid, open and honest in your response. Assert your beliefs respectfully. Treat the other person in a way that you would want to be treated. Remember it is the Holy Spirit who draws them: “No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day.” John 6:44 Avoid trying to debate a person struggling with alcohol to Christ. Rather, love them well by listening well and speaking the truth with gentlness and respect.

Share scripture, Talk To Jesus, yourself and your church. Scripture: "Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler, whoever's led astray by them is not wise." Proverbs 20:1 A person struggling with alcohol needs to hear about the eternal and abundant life that exists in and through Jesus. They need to hear truth. They need to experience faith. They need renewed hope, and they need to be loved. Make them aware of Jesus' love for them and the power that exists through Him to help them overcome alcoholism.  There is nothing a person struggling with alcohol can do to inherit eternal life; they must put their faith and trust in Jesus alone. Talk To Jesus: Our site url is added to all of our products so you can quickly and easily share Talk To Jesus with others. Encourage people struggling with alcohol to visit t2j.org, and invite them to join a Pathway To God Gathering. Once signed up, they will meet with the author of "Pathway To God" through ZOOM to learn more about Jesus and Christianity. You can also encourage them to click "Meet Jesus". Here they will read about who Jesus is, what He did and why He matters to them. They will hear the Gospel and have the opportunity to receive Jesus. Yourself: Consider following up with a person struggling with alcohol whom you interact with. Jesus told us not only to fish for men, but to 'make disciples'. Before leaving the people you meet, ask God if this is someone he would like you to disciple. If they are, exchange contact information, and consider discipling that person. Your church: Invite this person to join you and your church family for a service or gathering! Also consider sharing with your pastor or a leader within your church the relationship you have formed with a person struggling with alcohol. Keep your church leader(s) informed of your relationship and how its progressing. Ask if there are specific resources your church has access to that can help you as you witness to and disciple people struggling with alcohol.
